Impact of conflict in secondary education in south sudan
The conflict in South Sudan has negatively affected the educational system of the country in general and specifically the secondary education. This was seriously mark with the tragedy incident of Dec,15 2013 in which the students sitting for the secondary certificate where affected and the exams of that year is not value in south Sudan and is consider to be fake and even in some countries like Khartoum. The conflict has resulted in to interruption of educational system in most states in South Sudan which were affected and the students from those states were force to displace to other states in order to continue with their education. Most families with good financial status has to send their children to the neighboring countries to continue with their schools in a good learning atmosphere. The conflict does not only make interruption in educational system in some states in south Sudan but it generally affected the schools calendar of the whole country because schools at large in south Sudan don't have a fixed calendar and thats a very bad reputation for the educational system of the country. Some schools open in Feb while most open in May the same thing in higher institutions . The conflict has cause instability to most students in secondary schools because sitting for the secondary certificate needs peace of mind and this conflict has let to their poor academic performance which may affect them badly when joining the university thats why most students prefer to go to the neighboring countries but those who cant afford end up either continuing in such situation or dropout. So what i think the 14 of us can do after completing the program beside the conflict in the country is just to help in the part of designing a fixed calendar so that all schools can look the same and have a smart educational system. So friends what do you think about this suggestion or is their any alternative we can use to help in the adjustment of secondary education of South Sudan regardless of the conflict taking place?

Lucy, well stated and you ask a great question that make me to think of the best alternative we can choose to use.
ReplyDeleteLucy, this is wonderful. You identify a significant problem and identify a possible solution. A set calendar would provide some stability. (In the US our calendar tends to run from fall to spring with the summers off - there has been a trend to make schooling year round in some places. However, this isn't always popular!) You also made me think about the reputation of an education in South Sudan. If other countries are not recognizing the exams this has a huge negative affect on students, both those who sat for the exams and those currently in school! How will they value their education? This is definitely a huge incentive to work toward change! Thank you so much for sharing.
