How to develop South Sudan history curriculum.

History is what makes us understand about people and open our minds to different possibility. According to my suggestion I think we should use the balance approach of which we don’t teach everything, the students will get some of the information from their community perspectives while the role of school is to plant in their minds the heart of togetherness {we are the same} by focusing on the political development and welfare of the country and excluding the parts of war {conflicts} and the things that focus most on division which may again cause tribal prejudice then we teach them the effects of violence.
We can use examples from other countries to show them how to live so as to develop their national identity also. Finally we should teach history for a common good and encourage our students to visit places like the museums and historical sites to learn more about the country. I don’t know how the idea of museum and historical sites will help in the development of South Sudan history curriculum.

  1. The idea of museum and historical sites is so wonderful in the development of South Sudan history curriculum but the problem here is that i don't think the government and people of South Sudan has thought of putting up important historical sites apart from the one or two we normally see in juba. To me this will take us some years but it could be a good long term plan.

  2. Well Nalilim you're right about the idea of museum and historical sites thats make to remember my Secondary School history when we visited some various historical sites. That idea will really benefit students to know more about the culture background of South, ok to me that idea will help South drastically first of all it will make the government to think about setting up museums and historical site that really need to be there in order students to learn from them like the case of the Egyptians pyramids and pharaohs. As long as there is determination it can happen!

  3. Ladies, you said two of my favorite words: Museums and Historical Sites! (Seriously, I love teaching and learning at these informal environments. They are such a great way to engage students.)

The preservation of culture is so important as is the narrative chosen for these locations. Much like writing a history book or film these places select a particular story to tell. In the US there have been very heated arguments about museum exhibits and who is included or excluded. If you become involved in helping to establish one of these sites I encourage you to push for a woman's voice. Don't let the curators only tell the story of Men!

In the spring we will visit a Museum here in Bloomington and the educational curator will speak with us about their collection and how she uses it to teach. I hope you will enjoy the experience very much!
